![]() There must be a reason for the drastic decline of one of College Football greats, who was lucky enough to get drafted in the 2nd round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If you watch the video above of all of Roberto's misses, you will pray he can handle Chicago after being picked up immediately, after one of the most dreadful performances in NFL History. For some reason Roberto is extremely off rhythm in his approach and appears to be heavily overthinking the simple process he once mastered at Florida State. The cracking at the waist at contact is a attempt to really keep his head "down", instead of using his body to fluently kick the football. The 2nd kick, his hips get in front of his shoulders once again, as he picks his head up and appears to "Punch" at the football, instead of carrying his momentum forward, which is simple physics. What I have found is that the head controls the body's momentum, hence, this is why they like you to keep your head on the ball. It also provides much better contact when your eyes are locked in on your target. Staying upright through contact is crucial, but keeping your shoulders in front of your hips, creates what I like to call "Full Body Kicking", which I demonstrate almost daily as the GOAT. Roberto's whip at contact is extremely quick and not fluent enough to develop consistency over the course of a 16 game season. It creates a dynamic in the physics that does not correspond to positive results. The 4th kick of this dismal highlight, I find Roberto is extremely inconsistent with his approach to the football. This leads to a extremely "DEEP PLANT", which causes him to have to reach back and find the ball, he instead pulls his head up to see where the ball went, which causes a extremely erratic kick. The next kick in the film above, Roberto does the "CRUNCH" again and never follows through properly, as he once again stops his forward momentum to see where the football is heading, which causes another miss. Now starting to struggle, Roberto on the next kick, really tries to whip his leg through and forgets to use his "Counter Balance", which is his left arm, to create a strong but accurate kick. The 6th kick, Roberto comes extra quick at the football, which once again creates a very deep plant and he cannot save himself from disaster. His timing was better on the 7th kick, but he failed to "FINISH" his kick and pulled out early once again. What I mean by this is Roberto failed to perform the proper follow through needed for a maximal result kick, like we know he can hit from his stellar Collegiate career. The 8th kick is extremely poor body positioning, as Roberto's plant foot is pointed towards the football and once again extremely deep. This causes a extremely errant miss, as Roberto is not able to once again get his hips through properly to create a stellar kick. His "Punch/Jerk" motion at contact also creates a low ball, which is ultimately very easy to block as a defensive unit in today's outstanding NFL. Honestly, I blame the collapse on Kicking coaches and their "New Way" of kicking. I know one coach that teaches to keep your "EYES UP" at contact, which obviously creates problems with the technique needed to succeed. Why does THE NFL's GOAT, Adam Vinatieri start with his shoulders over his hips? Why would you not want to replicate the best in the game's technique? Below, I took my shoes off and hit from 60 yards and in today, showing how physics plays a role in kicking a football. To all of my young kickers, please learn from the guys who do it the consistent way, the other way could cost you your job. |
