2021 FOOTBALL SIGNINGS
Many 2021 football signings have been coming in late in the 2021 football recruiting class, as the NCAA granted seniors an extra year of eligibility. Why did this matter substantially for top 2021 football recruits? NCAA D1 football programs are allowed to have 85 players on "full tuition" scholarships on a roster per year, while FCS programs are allowed 63 full scholarships that can be distributed to no more than 85 players on a roster per year and D2 football programs are granted 36 full ride scholarships per year. The NAIA football league allows teams up to 24 full ride scholarships on a roster per year and D3 football programs are able to offer scholarships based off other criteria for high priority recruits. This rule was also passed by the NAIA Council of Presidents Committee and was explained in further detail by Matthew Curry of the Dickinson Press on November 6th, 2020.
“Due to the constraints that COVID-19 has imposed on collegiate athletics, most of our conferences believed it was in the best interest of our fall and winter student-athletes to not charge a season of competition this year,” NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr said in a press release.
2021 FOOTBALL RECRUITING
The 2021 football recruiting process was quite a conundrum, given the fact the the scholarships available now were decreasing substantially with seniors electing to return for the extra year of eligibility granted to college athletes. The ramifications were clearly evident at nearly every position, but most noticeably on my Top 2021 NFL Draft QB rankings on College Football Today RokFin. Upon the November release of the 2021 Top NFL Draft QB prospects, I had ranked a total of 37 NFL Draft eligible quarterback prospects and that list has now dwindled down to 17. Over half of the Top 2021 NFL Draft QB's decided to return to college for the extra year to possibly enhance their 2022 NFL Draft stock, as all but two did not grade out well as top tier 2021 NFL Draft QB prospects. This is just one small example of 20 full ride scholarships vanishing for top 2021 football recruits, who were offered by teams before the legislation was passed by the NCAA. These ramifications were experienced at every position on my NFL Draft Board, as I removed hundreds of players that elected to return to college and realized how drastically Covid-19 affected the recruits in the Class of 2021. After informing many of the Top 2021 FB recruits about the "NCAA Gap Year", they are electing to take their talents to the PREP/JUCO level and restart their recruitment as Top 2022 Football Recruits.

NCAA GAP YEAR RULE
I took full advantage of the NCAA gap rule in 2005 and got to nullify my kicking status with 247 Sports, as I am listed as a S/QB on the Hargave Military PG roster. Even if you are fully physically prepared to compete in college football today, it can be utilized as a unused year of eligibility to mature in all areas needed to become a successful student-athlete. Many have claimed this was the best Prep FB program of All-Time when it came to talent, so we got to play at the likes of UNC, Navy, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Kentucky and would stop at FCS Powerhouse programs like James Madison in our travels. The 2005 Hargrave PG combine attracted hundreds of division one coaches and it is where I began my college career as a defensive back. Having posted a 4.51, 40 yard dash, 4.25 shuttle & 33.5" vertical jump, I had the likes of Illinois, Maryland, Northeastern (FCS) and many other programs now on my official recruitment list. I was not on many of those teams recruiting boards before Hargrave, because they did not have a need or scholarship available for a kicker, even though some did offer a PWO spot. The Prep system was much different back in 2005 and our roster was chalk full of NCAA 3, 4 & 5 star non-qualifiers, who were strictly enrolled to raise their SAT scores. Given the scenario that presented itself in the 2021 football recruiting cycle, from top to bottom, the 2022 football recruiting class could pan out to be one of the most talented we have ever encountered. Many top FB recruit choose to drop down levels, after being deemed D1 caliber talent and we will be keeping a close watch on them for the next four years for future NFL Drafts.
