2021 NFL DRAFT QB JUSTIN FIELDS SCOUTING REPORT
When I evaluate this kind of talent at the top, which pretty much has it all. The first thing I look for is a catch-able football and more importantly, consistency in the throwing motion while also producing consistent positive results. Fields makes it very easy for the Ohio State Buckeyes receivers to catch the football, but does so with very good velocity and accuracy. He is highly adept at throwing on the run while using multiple arm angles to get the ball in perfect positioning for his receiver to make the catch. The ball placement Fields has demonstrated this season is the best I have witnessed on film since watching Kyler Murray’s passing abilities many times. If you watch the placement on his long ball, it can be zip lined on a rope and is thrown at eye level. Once an Ohio State receiver creates the very slightest separation, Fields let’s the football go and shows impeccable timing with his fellow Buckeyes. His short game passing is just as consistent in producing highly catch-able passes, in which the receiver can quickly flip his hips and dart up the field. These split tenths of a second that a receiver doesn’t have to change his eye level are the difference between a short completion and ball that goes for 6 points. The Ohio State Quarterback is 72 for 83 on the 2020 season and 11 touchdowns in only three games, while boasting an impeccable 222.4 QB rating. In order to stay ahead of the likes of Mac Jones, Trevor Lawrence or possibly even Ian Book, he is going to have to finish the season just as strong and lead the Buckeyes to an undefeated CFB Playoff bid. The thing that doesn’t bode too well for the number pick is they have to go to the worst team in the NFL, which happens to be the NY Jets. The game today against a top 10 ten ranked opponent in Indiana, will reveal what FIelds is really made of the heat of battle, against a defense that should also produce many 2021 & 2022 NFL Draft picks. Thus far, he has shown no glimpses of lack of focus and is one of the most confident pocket-passers under Coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes coaching staff.
2021 NFL DRAFT QB ZACH WILSON SCOUTING REPORT
Zach Wilson - Wilson is very nimble when evading pass rushers, as he is very fleet of football in and out of the pocket. He slings the football with uncanny accuracy and is able to fit the football into small windows, while keeping the football away from defenders with surgical ball placement. Wilson is the most technically sound QB in the 2021 NFL Draft and uses his core to whip the football with excellent velocity down the field. He executes BYU’s brilliant offensive variations, which include many pro-style sets beautifully and is a cerebral scrambler when escaping the pocket. He does well on designed runs and knows when to get down to save his longevity for an NFL Franchise. When evaluating throwing motions, he has very little to no wind up in his delivery and has one of the quickest releases in the 2021 NFL QB draft class. He has proven to be a consistent leader through thick and thin with the BYU Cougars and will be automatic offense for any team in the NFL with his highly versatile, yet cerebral style of play. There was another QB like this back in BYU, USFL and NFL history books and his name was Steve Young. Unlike the two 2021 NFL Draft quarterbacks above, Wilson was a 3-Star recruit coming out of High School and rated the 38th "Pro-Style" QB in the nation according to 247 Sports. The only real knock against Zach would be that he hasn't played the brutal schedule of many of the top 2021 NFL Draft QB's, as they face off against FCS opponent North Alabama today, but he was able to dismantle a very talented Boise State defense. With that being said, when you study the overall fluidity, consistency and body mechanics in his delivery, along with his brilliant athletics, Wilson becomes extremely hard to pass up in this years 2021 NFL Draft.
2021 NFL DRAFT QB MAC JONES SCOUTING REPORT
Alabama Quarterback Mac Jones has also been placing the ball in prime positioning for his receivers to easily catch the football at it's highest point over the top of defenders. Jones has demonstrated remarkable over the top touch passing to his prolific 1st RD receiving talent this season and has all of the tools to be a high caliber NFL quarterback. He is able to avoid pressure by instinctively knowing where the rush is coming from and works to the open spot of the pocket, while being able to place the football away from the over the top safety and where only his receiver can make the reception. The Heisman Trophy front runner can stick the football into tightly knit creases in the defense that are completely covered and is one the best at working through his route progressions. You will very often see Mac quickly be able to find his check down or 5th or 6th read and rarely will give up negative plays. It does help to have a dominant back like Najee Harris and the vast amount of talent that Jones has on the outside, but if there is one quarterback who fits the mold of a big time NFL quarterback, I believe it is Mac Jones. I thoroughly value the way he is able to manipulate the defense with subtle, but authoritative shoulder pumps to draw defensive backs out of position and how he creates holes in the defensive secondary. This is very much like the sure first ballot Hall of Fame New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, but Jones stands 6'3,215, while having the same deceptiveness about where he is delivering the football. Obviously, Alabama is doing a great job training quarterbacks as Tua has led the Dolphins back to contention in the AFC East and Mac Jones is leading the highly potent Crimson-Tide offense on what could be an epic CFB playoff run. Alabama will take on the 3-4 Kentucky Wildcats today, who haven't played badly defensively against top tier opponents like Georgia, where they only allowed 14 points against the very talented Dawgs. Mac has been climbing the boards of many NFL executives all season long and could potentially surpass some of the names above by finishing undefeated and bringing home both the 2021 Heisman Trophy, as well as Coach Saban's 7th National Championship.
2021 NFL DRAFT QB PROSPECT KYLE TRASK SCOUTING REPORT
The Gators quarterback might have the biggest upside in this year's 2021 NFL Draft class, even though he can make some bad decisions at times. This could be due to his surging confidence as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate or the lack of experience at the quarterback position. Trask never started a game at Manvel HS in Texas and was D'Eriq King's backup quarterback since his Freshmen season. In his first two seasons as the Gators QB, Trask has proven he has what it takes to potentially become a NFL Franchise quarterback, but he has shown some mental lapses in judgement this season. With that being said, Kyle has thrown for 28 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions on the 2020 college football season, as he is able to drop the ball over the top of the defense with outstanding timing & precision. He has proven to be a clutch performer in the times where the Gators needed big plays and Coach Mullen has done a masterful job at molding Kyle Trask into a potential 1st RD NFL Draft pick. I just witnessed some plays against a Dawgs defense that is most comparable to a quick twitch NFL defense that worried me somewhat, but he is too talented of an overall athlete with his Pro-Style frame to pass up. I believe with a year or two under his belt in an NFL organization, Trask will prove to be a reliable and highly effective top tier NFL quarterback in the future. He should finish off the season with epic numbers, as the Gators final four opponents have a combined 7-17 record in SEC play. Trask executes NFL style back shoulder throws at a very high level and has NFL caliber receiving targets to work with in the Gators offensive arsenal. Much like Drew Lock in the 2019 NFL Draft, he has somewhat of a longer delivery, which can be tweaked during his NFL Draft training with the right QB coach. As I have stated before, this gives edge rushers more time to get to the QB and defensive backs a split second to break on the football. But they overall pro-style scheme that Trask is running under Mullen, has proven to work with his highly intriguing next level skill-set.
2021 NFL DRAFT QB SAM EHLINGER SCOUTING REPORT
In all fairness to Sam, he hasn't had much help from the offensive line and inadvertent turnovers that had nothing to do with him in 2020. Sam has played some of the best football I have seen this season and kept the Longhorns in contention in BIG 12 football play. He has had an epic four year run as the Texas starting QB and plays with the heart of a lion, as one of the most competitive overall football players in the nation. Sam has the ability to take over a game with his athletics and the powerful Tim Tebow like power running style. Ehlinger also has a very fluent throwing motion and is able to get the ball to his play-makers using a multitude of arm angles, while under constant duress. He is adept at feeling pressure and stepping up or vacating the pocket to create passing lanes when all seemed to be lost. For his large 6'3,225 pound stature, Sam's athletics are remarkable and we will get to evaluate him first hand at the 2021 NFL Reese's Senior Bowl, which will be a true test to see where Sam stacks up against the nation's best 2021 NFL Draft quarterbacks. The Longhorns are off this week, but face a highly talented Top 25 Iowa State next week and look to improve their winning steak to four games straight, as well as stay in the conversation for the Big 12 Championship.
2021 NFL DRAFT QB JAMIE NEWMAN SCOUTING REPORT
I would have loved to see the Newman to George Pickens connection this year, but 2021 NFL Draft & Senior Bowl QB Jamie Newman decided to roll the dice that he will be selected highly in the NFL Draft. Jamie was extremely impressive last season for the Demon Deacons and has one of the most beautiful touch passes, as well as deep balls in this year's 2021 NFL Draft QB class. He also possesses the athletics of a younger Cam Newton, but is a much more refined passer coming out of college. I believe with a solid 2021 Senior Bowl performance and a blistering 40 time in the 2021 NFL combine, we could potentially see Newman taken in the late 1st or early 2nd round in the NFL Draft. Jamie does a great job at looking off his first read and quickly coming back to the other side of the playing field to deliver the football with uncanny precision. He is another guy on this list that gives his receivers a chance to make a play on the football at it's highest point and is among the best at creating offense with his powerful downhill style of running.
2021 NFL DRAFT QB LANCE TREY SCOUTING REPORT
The NDSU quarterback has all of the tools athletically to be an All-Pro caliber NFL Quarterback and has NFL scouts raving about the overall potential he possesses at the next level. His number are off the charts statistically and I believe Lance will have the opportunity to demonstrate that he has the elite arm talent needed to excel in the NFL during his pro day, as well as at the NFL Combine. He can be seen running a pro-style offensive attack at NDSU, that has many college style spread concepts mixed in to make him the ultimate offensive weapon at the FCS level of College Football Today. You honestly cannot argue about his production last season, as he was able to toss 28 TD's and rush for another 14 TD's, while not throwing one interception on the season. North Dakota State only played one game this year against a very talented Central Arkansas, where Lance completed only 50% of his passes, but rushed for almost 150 yards in the Bison's victory. It will be interesting to see if that average performance lingers up until his pro day and into the 2021 NFL Combine, but if anything, he could be a generational talent that is very hard to pass up in this year's 2021 NFL Draft.
2021 NFL DRAFT QB TREVOR LAWRENCE SCOUTING REPORT
Let me first start off by stating that Trevor Lawrence is going to be a very good NFL quarterback. He has led the best team in the nation to a national championship and does mostly everything Fields does on tape, except does not have the exact pin-pointing eye level precision that you see out of Fields. Lawrence gets the football out of his hands quickly and orchestrates the play-action game masterfully at times. He is able to throw the football early once the receiver gets out of his breaks and shows excellent touch on his deep balls. Looking back at the 2019 NFL Draft class, the year Clemson won the National title. I got to relive arguably the greatest college defensive front ever produced in a NFL Draft class. At this point in the college football season, Lawrence and the Clemson offense have kept them in their winning ways, until they met up with Notre Dame and their leader was sidelined due to Covid-19. I am excited to see him back in action against the Seminoles today and believe he has a body of work that is very hard to deny if you are an NFL Franchise looking for a proven winner in this year's 2021 NFL Draft.
