Throughout my 20 plus years of playing Football, I have experienced every type of coach you can in sports. Growing up in New Jersey I really had a lot of those "Macho" coaches, who only yelled and screamed at you, even when they were trying to encourage you. When I look back and after studying some of the best in Football, this method is not one that will be successful. This method shows me that the coach does not know what he is doing, because if he has to yell and scream to get things done, he obviously doesn't know how to fix the issue. The best philosophy I have seen is the Coach who points out the mistake and offers a solution. Doing things this way shows you know what the heck you are talking about and gives players confidence in you! This will create a team that trusts their Coach and a team that values his opinion. You are a Coach, not a player anymore, so practice the three C's like a lot of you preach and be Cool, Calm and Collected. If you are not experiencing the three C's on game day, than I believe you failed the other 6 days of the week. Preparation does not have to be a rigorous classroom that half your players are asleep! "Chalk Talk" sessions should never last more than 15-20 mins. I do not need to watch "Film" with my ball players, if you are a head coach you should be able to portray to them, through words EXACTLY what they need to be studying on their own. When a player comes to football practice the last thing he wants to do is study film! Hold them accountable and make sure they studied their part by asking questions before practice to each position group. If they don't give you the right responses, then discipline is in order. Let's talk about disciplining ball players and how it effects their lives. I have seen brutal strategies handed down by coaches that just wanted to see us all throw up. We learned nothing and usually went back to the same activities that the coach disagreed with. Playing time and placement on the depth chart always fixed my attitude at a young age. Destroying your athlete's with NAZI Germany like torture techniques is not productive and will most likely turn your players against you eventually. Once again act like you know what you are doing and offer solutions to fix these issues, rather than doing what your coach did in 1962. Lets touch on Racist coaches for a minute because I have seen teams first hand practice brutal racism in Football. The SLAVE director mind-set that I have come across in the Arena game made me wanna puke. The color of skin should not matter to a head coach and who gets the ball and who doesn't. If you haven't noticed the teams that spread the ball around to every color race usually win the game. I watched a team make sure that the "white players" all got the ball 75 percent more than the African American players, who clearly were better. They actually went as far to put a guy at QB, who was white, that never played QB and it was not fun to watch. I left that team directly after the first game because of what I had witnessed. This goes the other way around to. See I can tell right away when something is "off" with a coach and if he is being controlled by a outside source. When you took the Head Coaching job I bet you did not know you had to listen to these guys, huh? The things they are feeding you are producing losses, but they are the boss. They cut your check, they own your tail! You have now had a losing record for years because you did not stand up for your own beliefs and nobody is going to hire you. I have learned the best coaches in the game will up and leave before they get to this point. Everybody thinks if a Football coach jumps ship to another program that he is disloyal or proud. I think you should go back to your day job, because you have no clue how this business works. Being honest with your ball players will also go a very long way. I also had a coach tell a entire team that he played with Virginia Tech and he never even was on practice squad. I don't know about you, but I want my leader to be honest about his playing career and past so we can feel comfortable with the so called leader we are supposed to be learning from. These lies get you a administration job (desk job) making peanuts in the CFL. Its just God's way of letting you know your a pathological chronic liar. So now you can lie at your desk to the computer. So just be honest with you ball players, if you never played it's fine, there are plenty of coaches out there who I respect who never played the game, at a high level. I have learned that quick assessing a problem and than fixing it with instant encouragement and knowledge is the only productive way. Your job is to motivate and show these players how to succeed. Implement the game plan and strategies in a way that is not only fun, but teaches each player something new everyday. The game is ever evolving and I guarantee if you start to let go of these old unproductive LOSING ways, you will be able to achieve what you set out for. I have learned that most Pigs thou will keep wallowing in the same mud, not being able to smell the other pigs around them. I have also seen a pig morph into the director of wolves, because one day his senses came back and he could smell the pigs. He learned that pigs will be led straight to the slaughterhouse and only the wise wolves will be left. Football is all about creating separation in some form, my question to you today Coach is, How are you going to create this separation? #ScoutTrout #Coaching #Philosophy #BallerAlert #CoachTrout #CollegeFootball #HSFOOTBALL #NFL #NFLPLAYOFFS #STEELERS #FALCONS #TEXANS #PATRIOTS #SEAHAWKS #PACKERS #CHIEFS #CFL #CFLFOOTBALL #IFL #INDOORFOOTBALLLEAGUE #NATIONALARENALEAGUE #WINNING #SeniorBowl #MobileAlabama Scout Trout will be at the Reese's Senior Bowl from January 21st - January 29th!
